The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho

Picture
"Paulo Coelho's masterpiece tells the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found.
The story of the treasures Santiago finds along the way teaches us, as only a few stories can, about the essential wisdom of listening to our hearts, learning to read the omens strewn along life's path, and, above all, following our dreams."

Explore admin assistant, Ms. Brei Souza, enjoys spin, hiking, yoga and anything outside. Her favourite genres include self inquiry and self-help.

So why did she chose this book? "I loved this book years ago when I first read it. It made me look within and ask myself questions that lead me on my journey of life. Books that can do that are always good to read again as your life changes and so do you." And why should you? "I recommend this book as I think it's important to ask yourself questions about what you really want on the journey of life. This book offers a great story of making a choice and how choices can lead us to something way more profound than what we were expecting. I always believe in following your heart and your calling, as it may not turn out how one envisions, but whatever happens, is an opportunity for growth and learning about one's self."

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Picture
"A group of teenage boys get stranded on an island. Chaos ensues. A wonderful examination of how civilization works, or doesn't, power dynamics, and how human nature can be divided in to good vs. evil."

Head of Geer House, Mr. David Pool, teaches Leadership 11 and he coaches Cross-Country and Mountain Biking as well as sponsoring Encounter. In his free time, he enjoys running, cycling, playing guitar and bocce. Mr. Pool's favourite genre is historical fiction. So why pick this book? "It's a classic and a compelling story! It's really interesting and probably relatable to some struggles students face daily."
