All the Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr

Picture
"A blind French girl on the run from the German occupation and a German orphan-turned-Resistance tracker struggle with their respective beliefs after meeting on the Brittany coast."

Picture
Social Studies teacher, Ms. Brenna Dowling, enjoys reading, calligraphy, camping, and off-roading. She loves historical fiction: "It can give you a great feel for the time period and makes history feel more personal."
Of this selection she says: "This book doesn't go into too much depth on World War II itself, but you still get a real sense of the tensions felt by everyday people."

The Lost Letter by Jillian Cantor

Picture
"A young apprentice works secretly for the Austrian resistance in World War II and resolves to save the fiery daughter of his Jewish stamp engraver master, a story that is found decades later by a divorced descendant who investigates an unusual stamp on an old love letter."

Picture
Ms. Jennifer Hetherington teaches Foundations of Math and Precalculus 10 and Senior Key. She is a co-sponsor of Backpack Buddies. Ms. Hetherington enjoys books inspired by true stories and was recommended this one by a friend who gave it a top rating (and she is picky) - “goosebumps worthy”! "It is beautiful writing and an inspiring tale with two story lines that come together to create a book that you won’t be able to put down."

Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate

Picture
"A tale inspired by firsthand accounts about the notoriously corrupt Tennessee Children's Home Society follows the efforts of a Baltimore assistant D.A. to uncover her parents' fateful secrets in the wake of a political attack and a chance encounter with a stranger."

Picture
Ms. Diana Lee teaches Physical Education.

The Night Watchman by Louise Erdrich

Picture
"A historical novel based on the life of the author’s grandfather traces the experiences of a Chippewa Council night watchman in mid-19th-century rural North Dakota who fights Congress to enforce Native American treaty rights."

Picture
Science teacher, Mr. Evan Hall, coaches Rugby. Most of his spare time is taken up by his toddler, but he likes being out on the water, fishing and enjoys all kinds of sports and exercise.
Mr. Hall reads a lot of nonfiction but also likes a good murder mystery.

Suite française by Irène Némirovsky

Picture
"A story of life in France under the Nazi occupation includes two parts--"Storm in June," set amid the chaotic 1940 exodus from Paris, and "Dolce," set in a German-occupied village rife with resentment, resistance, and collaboration."

Picture
Modern Language teacher, Ms. Manuela Vieira-Riberiro, sponsors Backpack Buddies. She enjoys all kinds of fiction and biographies.
