The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway

Picture
"The story of a group of Americans and English on a sojourn from Paris to Paloma, evokes in poignant detail, life among the expatriates on Paris's Left Bank, during the 1920s and conveys in brutally realistic descriptions the power and danger of bullfighting in Spain."

Ms. Bethan Haston teaches Humanities 9 and AP Human Geography. She coaches volleyball and sponsors the Geography Club. In her free time, she enjoys almost all outdoor activities, spending time with her dog, Louis, and listening to sentimental podcasts. Despite "trying to fight it," she is drawn to non fiction.

So why pick this book? "I wanted to read a classic and really like the style of Hemmingway. The book 'tells the story of a group of disillusioned expatriates living in post–World War I Europe, searching for meaning as they travel, drink, and engage in romances during a Spanish fiesta.' Also Ms. Piovesan said I should read it and she is usually right about this stuff."

For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway

Picture
"The story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to an antifascist guerilla unit in the mountains of Spain, it tells of loyalty and courage, love and defeat, and the tragic death of an ideal."

Picture
Socials teacher Mr. Wam Huis in 't Veld coaches rugby, basketball and track and field. In his free time, he enjoys snowboarding, hockey, reading, traveling, and board games. His favourite genre is historical fiction.

So why should you read this novel? "This book will transform you and bring you to another time and place."
