Alanna: The First Adventure by Tamora Pierce

Picture
"Eleven-year-old Alanna, who aspires to be a knight even though she is a girl, disguises herself as a boy to become a royal page, and learns many hard lessons along her path to high adventure."

Picture
Ms. Kyla Chau teaches English 12 and Humanities 8 and sponsors Debate. In her free time, she likes trying new recipes, reading (fantasy and shoujo manga are her favourite genres) singing, and watching TV with her cat.

Of her selection, she says: "This book was my first introduction to fantasy novels, and holds a special place in my heart. Pierce has many books within the universe of Tortall, and this is a great first step down the rabbit hole..."

Dune by Frank Herbert

Picture
"Set on the desert planet Arrakis, this is the story of the boy Paul Atreides, who would become the mysterious man known as Muad'Dib, avenge the traitorous plot against his noble family, and bring to fruition humankind's most ancient and unattainable dream."

Picture
Music guru Mr. David Buchan directs Intermediate, Junior Chamber Choir, and Music Tours. In his free time, he loves to travel.
Mr. Buchan's favourite genres are fantasy and sci-fi.

Of this novel, he says: "I first read it when I was a teen, but 150 years later, I would like a second go of it!!! Especially before the movie release!"

Fable by Adrienne Young

Picture
"Seventeen-year-old Fable joins the young, motley crew of the Marigold to escape the island where her father abandoned her, but she quickly realizes life off the island is more dangerous than she imaged."

Picture
Ms. Jennifer Dousett is the Director of Teaching and Learning. In her free time, she enjoys puzzles, watching anime, and "driving my kids around."

Her favourite genre is realistic fiction, so why choose to sponsor a fantasy novel? "I love a good page turner, especially in the summer. Any book described as a "whirlpool of swashbuckling action, swoon-worthy romance, and sensational world-building" is a must read for me."

The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien

Picture
"Bilbo Baggins, a respectable, well-to-do hobbit, lives comfortably in his hobbit-hole until the day the wandering wizard Gandalf chooses him to take part in an adventure from which he may never return."

Picture
Mr. Liam Murray teaches Science 10 Enriched, Life Science 11, Science 8, and PE 8, coaches Grade 9 and Junior Rugby Teams, and sponsors Encounter. In his free time, he likes to hike, bike, and ski. He enjoys reading science fiction, fantasy (action and adventure), and mystery.

So why pick this novel? "I read this book as a kid and absolutely loved it! It's a fun, easy read and honestly, who doesn't like getting lost in Tolkien's fantasy world."

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Picture
"Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee."

Picture
Head of Geer House Mr. David Pool sponsors Cross-Country, Encounter, and Mountain Biking. In his free time, he enjoys playing guitar and trail running.

Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind

Picture
"In the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary seeking help . . . and more."

Picture
Mr. Michael Schaldemose teaches Theatre Production and sponsors the school plays. In his free time, he enjoys gaming, driving with the top down listening to 70's and 80's music, making things out of anything and travel--the more dangerous the better.

His favourite genres are Sci-fi, fantasy, science, and history "because it's fun and mind expanding." So why select this novel? "It is the first book of the best fantasy adventure series I've read."
