Why did she select this novel: "I am currently reading the first book in the Dune series and have been very impressed with the complex world and political systems created by Frank Herbert. The characters are rich and so is the language. At the beginning of each chapter is an excerpt from a books written in the future, and so you learn about the world and where the characters are headed through the present and the future. The book was adapted into a movie, which I saw, and it was great. The second book takes place 12 years after the first, when the protagonist is all grown up. I am pretty excited to learn what he's like as an adult, if he retains some of his youth, or if he's become hardened by war and politics."

Wu Zetian is an 18-year-old girl in a world where women's lives can take only one of two paths. Either path leads to a life of subservience, where the only chance of success depends on being as pleasing as possible to men. And one path leads to an early grave. Zetian's older sister became a concubine co-pilot and was murdered by her counterpart before her first battle in a Chrysalis. Zetian will do whatever it takes to avenge her sister, even at the cost of her own life. Not even she could have imagined how things would play out, but since she's still standing, she determines to finally break free of everything and everyone that's held her back all her life.
